Cement manufacturing in India

India is the second-largest manufacturer of cement in the world, making it a significant sector in the nation. In India, there are about 140 sizable cement plants with a combined installed capacity of more than 410 million metric tonnes annually. A small number of businesses, including UltraTech Cement, ACC, Ambuja Cements, and Shree Cement, control the majority of the Indian cement market.

1. In India, the steps below are often included in the cement manufacturing process:

2. Quarrying: Raw materials, such as limestone, clay, and other materials, are extracted from quarries using blasting and drilling techniques.

3. Crushing and grinding: After being crushed, the raw materials are processed into raw meal, a fine powder.

4. Preheating: The raw meal is heated to between 400 and 450 degrees Celsius in a preheater tower.

5. Kiln: A kiln is a sizable circular furnace into which uncooked meal that has been heated beforehand is fed. The uncooked meal is converted into clinker at a temperature of roughly 1450 degrees Celsius in the kiln.

6. Grinding: To make cement, the clinker is ground into a fine powder and combined with a little quantity of gypsum.

7. Packaging: The cement is then transported to construction sites in bags or in bulk.

The price of cement in India can vary depending on various factors such as location, brand, demand, and supply. Here is a rough estimate of the price range of some popular cement brands in India as of 2023:

UltraTech Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

ACC Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Ambuja Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Shree Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Ramco Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

JK Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Prism Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Birla Gold Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Dalmia Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Sanghi Cement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 460 per 50 kg bag

Please note that these prices are estimates and can vary depending on the region, supplier, and quantity of cement purchased. It's always best to check with local suppliers for up-to-date pricing information and to inquire about any discounts that may be available for bulk purchases. Additionally, there may be other fees or costs associated with the purchase of cement such as delivery fees, taxes, and handling fees, which can also affect the overall price

Cement

Any construction relies on cement as its foundation. Some cement production companies in India operate under the maxim of offering the best cement for construction.

One of the most crucial building materials, cement, is a binding agent that sets and hardens to cling to structural components like stones, bricks, and tiles. Generally speaking, cement is a very fine powdery material produced primarily of limestone (calcium), sand or clay (silicon), bauxite (aluminium), and iron ore, however it may also contain shells, chalk, marl, shale, clay, blast furnace slag, and slate. In cement manufacturing facilities, the raw materials are transformed and heated to create a rock-hard substance, which is then ground into a fine powder to be sold. When cement and water are combined, a chemical reaction occurs that creates a paste that sets and hardens to bond the various building ingredients together.

The most common building material is cement. In order to save construction costs, cement price is vital to consider when purchasing.

History of Cement

Since the beginning of human civilization, cement has been employed in many different ways, although being distinct from the refined product seen today. The first hydraulic cement was used by the Romans in the middle ages and was made from volcanic ashes, crushed pottery, burnt gypsum, and hydrated lime. Cement development continued until the 18th century, when James Parker patented Roman cement, which became popular but was eventually replaced by Portland cement in the 1850s.

Frenchman Louis Vicat set the groundwork for Portland cement's chemical makeup in the 19th century, and Russian author Egor Cheliev authored articles on the production processes, applications, and benefits of cement. William Aspdin created the "modern" Portland cement, which was quickly in quite high demand. Joseph Aspdin introduced Portland cement to the market in England. However, Isaac Charles Johnson, who made a significant contribution by describing a procedure for creating meso-Portland cement in the kiln, is regarded as the true inventor of Portland cement.

Cement Chemistry

Based on how it is formed and hardened, there are primarily two types of cement: hydraulic cement, which hardens as a result of the addition of water, and non-hydraulic cement, which hardens by carbonation with the carbon in the air, making it unsuitable for usage underwater.

The following steps are used to create non-hydraulic cement (lime cycle)

1. Calcination: Lime is produced from limestone at over 825°C for about 10 hours. (CaCO3 → CaO + CO2)

2. Slaking: Calcium oxide is mixed with water to make slaked lime. (CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2)

3. Setting: Water is completely evaporated.

4. The cement is exposed to dry air and it hardens after time-consuming reactions. (Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O)
